HOW TO Install Traditional Wallpaper
Follow our easy step by step guide for the perfect install of your N&F Traditional Wallpaper
STEP ONE
PREPARE THE WALL
The wall must be smooth, clean, and dry. Remove old wallcoverings, fill holes, sand smooth, then prime the entire surface (we recommendShieldz Universal Wallcovering Primer).
PRO TIP: Panels follow texture — they don't hide it. Skim-coat and sand textured walls before priming.
STEP TWO
GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES
Have everything at hand before you begin.
- N&F Seamless Wallpaper Panels
- Wallpaper paste (heavy-duty clear vinyl adhesive — we use Roman PRO-880)
- Paint roller & tray
- Wallpaper smoothing tool or plastic squeegee
- Level & pencil
- Measuring tape
- Craft knife with fresh blades
- Metal straightedge
- Large sponge & bucket of warm water
- Clean dry cloths
- Drop cloth
- Step ladder
STEP THREE
Mark your plumb line
Use a level and pencil to draw a vertical plumb line from ceiling to floor at your starting point. Never use a corner or baseboard as your guide — walls are rarely perfectly square.
STEP FOUR
Apply paste to the panel
Lay the panel face-down and roll paste onto the back, starting in the center and working out to the edges. Cover the entire surface evenly — dry spots will lift. Paste goes on the panel only, not the wall.
PRO TIP: Any paste on the front of the panel must be wiped off immediately — dried paste can stain.
STEP FIVE
Book the panel
Fold the panel loosely onto itself — pasted side to pasted side — without creasing the folds. Let it rest for5–8 minutesso the paste can absorb and the panel can expand to its final size. Skipping this is the most common cause of seam gaps.
STEP SIX
HANG FIRST PANEL
Align the left edge with your plumb line, leaving 1–2 inches of overhang at the ceiling. Unfold the bottom half and smooth the panel onto the wall from the center outward, working out all air bubbles.
STEP SEVEN
TRIM THE EDGES
Trim excess at the ceiling and baseboard using a metal straightedge and craft knife — one confident cut, no sawing. Change the blade every 1–2 panels. For outlets, cut an X and trim the flaps (turn off power first).
STEP EIGHT
WIPE EXCESS PASTE
Immediately and gently wipe the panel surface to remove all excess paste. Paste left to dry on the pattern can stain permanently.
STEP NINE
REPEAT FOR ALL PANELS
Butt each panel edge-to-edge with no overlap or gap, checking vertical alignment with your level as you go. Allow the finished installation to dry undisturbed for 24–48 hours— avoid drafts, direct heat, and open windows.
